The Finnish 25 pennia of the 1940s was a small-denomination coin used during one of the most turbulent periods in Finland's history. It circulated during the reign of President Kyösti Kallio and later Risto Ryti, as Finland fought to preserve its independence during World War II. The penni was the 1/100 subdivision of the Finnish markka. Twenty-five pennia therefore represented ¼ of a markka. These coins were used for everyday purchases such as small amounts of food and other necessities. The 1940s were especially significant for Finland. In 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland, beginning the Winter War. Finland continued fighting the Soviet Union in the Continuation War (1941–1944), this time alongside Germany against the USSR. By 1944, Finland agreed to an armistice with the Soviets and subsequently fought German forces in the Lapland War. The 25 pennia coins from this era were generally made of copper or copper-based alloy, depending on the specific year and issue. The designs typically feature the Finnish crowned heraldic lion, one of the country's most recognizable national symbols, along with the denomination and date.
