Columbia 1938 Un Centavo - Republica de Columbia - 1 Cent Columbia

This listing is for the photographed Columbia 1938 Un Centavo. 

The coin was issued by the Republic of Colombia and circulated as a small-denomination coin when Colombia's currency was the peso. The obverse shows a personification of Liberty, wearing a Phrygian-style cap marked “LIBERTAD.” The inscription reads: REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA 1938. The reverse has: 1 CENTAVO surrounded by a laurel wreath, symbolizing victory and civic achievement.  During the early 20th century, Colombia sometimes contracted foreign mints to produce its circulating coins. The Philadelphia Mint produced a number of Colombian denominations, including this 1938 centavo. This particular Liberty design was used from 1918 through 1948, making your coin part of a fairly long-running Colombian coin series. Interestingly, later Colombian centavos eventually changed composition and design, while this earlier series retained the Liberty portrait.
