The French Protectorate was established in 1881 after the Treaty of Bardo. The Tunisian Bey remained the nominal ruler, but France increasingly controlled the country's administration, finances, military affairs, and foreign relations. The monetary system had already been changed in 1891, when Tunisia replaced the traditional rial/piaster system with the franc, divided into 100 centimes. The new coins were struck at the Paris Mint and generally carried both French/Latin and Arabic inscriptions. The Banque Centrale de Tunisie notes that this monetary system remained closely integrated with the French franc zone until and even shortly after Tunisian independence in 1956.
