This listing is for the photographed 1862 J.S. Blaisdell 10 Cents Obsolete Merchant Scrip Remainder Note. This is a remainder note, meaning that it was never circulated, as identified by lack of signature and serial number. Located in Wentworth, New Hampshire. The printed issue date for this note is November 1st, 1862. A vignette printed in the upper left corner of the note features an allegorical woman representing Hope sat beside an anchor facing to the left. This scrip note would be used similar to a modern-day coupon, giving the customer a discount of the determined amount off of their purchase of more than 1 dollar at the merchant's store. Scrip notes were popularly used during the Civil War and the aftermath of the economic panic of 1857 in an attempt to boost sales for local businesses. 

Joshua S. Blaisdell was born in 1820 in Dorchester, New Hampshire. In the mid-1840s he moved to Wentworth, NH and opened a store that was located on Old Coos Road. He served as Postmaster of the town, operating the post office from his store, from 1845 to 1849. By 1850 Blaisdell was the second wealthiest man in the town according to tax records, showing the immense success of his store. In 1851 he became a justice of the peace in Wentworth, along with several other local businessmen at the time. In the years leading up to the Civil War Blaisdell operated one of the two most successful storefronts in Wentworth. He operated the store successfully for over 20 years before retiring to Rhode Island in 1869.
