This listing is for the W. & L.E.  Antique Surveying Instrument in box with a Stand. This item differs greatly from a regular telescope as its added appendages its furnished with multiple bubble levels and various ways to adjust it to your liking. The original box and carrying case come with this item, and the lock mechanism still functions, and the key is attached to the handle. All three of the bubble levels are present and functional. There is no serial number; which dates this between 1852-1908, since in 1908 having serial numbers with implemented as a new company standard. The optics on this piece are in good working order. Crosshairs are present and intact. Older models such as this one have a small clamp mechanism to lift the compass needle off its delicate pivot when not being used. This includes the wooden tripod, which screws the surveying instrument into place. 

William Gurley and his younger brother Lewis E. Gurley founded the W. and L. E. Gurley company in 1852 in Troy, New York. At this time, the company specialized in manufacturing and supplying precision instruments for civil engineering and surveyors. This company was leading not only in its technology but also in its management.
