This listing is for the photographed 1865 J. H. Lansley's Rutland Commercial College 5 Dollar College Currency Note. Unlike many other college currency obsolete notes, this one was fully signed and issued, bearing the date of June 1865. This note is a rare denomination, as it is not even listed by Schingoethe in their book on obsolete college currency! The Rutland Commercial College only operated under this name from 1864 to the end of 1865 before changing their name to "Vermont Commercial College", making notes such as this one that bear their first name rare surviving remnants of the institution! The obverse of this note features a vignette of a portrait of a woman on the right end, a Native American on horseback shooting a buffalo with a bow and arrow at the center, and a woman standing beside a column that says "union" on the left end. The reverse of this note features an ornamented design that is printed in green and has text about the college at the center. Very Fine (VF) grade/condition, visible folds and other signs of circulation, as pictured. Rare surviving "college currency" note from their early usage in the mid 19th century. Great rare find with an incredibly interesting history!

James H. Lansley opened the Rutland Commercial College in Rutland, Vermont, in 1864. Lansley was an experienced business professor, teaching at the Fort Edward Commercial College until he decided to open a school of his own in Rutland. He hired several other experienced professors in the field to teach the schools curriculum of business practices and penmanship. The school was located in a building on Grove St. in Rutland, Vermont. In 1866 Lansley moved the school to Poultney, Vermont, after which he changed the name to "Vermont Commercial College". The school remained in Poultney for two years until Lansley sold the school and moved to New Jersey, where he would go on to open another commercial college in 1868.
