This listing is for the photographed 1863 S. Randall / Bank of Caledonia 3 Cent Merchant Scrip Note. This scrip note would have been backed by the Bank of Caledonia in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, as identified by the banks name printed at the center of the note. Dated January 1st, 1863. Fully signed and issued scrip note. A vignette of a dog laying down beside a key and safe is displayed at the center of the obverse of this note. Very Fine (VF) grade/condition, visible folds and other signs of circulation. Great rarer find, making for the perfect addition to any collection!

Sias Randall was born in Danville, Vermont in 1822. He and his brothers began manufacturing threshing machines in the 1840s in Danville, and this business venture continued for seven years. By 1850 Sias had left the business and began his own machine manufacturing business in Paddock Village in St. Johnsbury, VT. He began building the nucleus of what would become Randall's Block in downtown St. Johnsbury in 1854 with a two-story, 30ft by 50ft complex where he founded a new business venture as a merchant. Soon after finishing the building, he began operating the second drug store ever established in St. Johnsbury, partnering with a local physician, Dr Hoyt. The store not only carried various drugs for the townsfolk, but also provided other general necessities, such as paints, oils, and glass. The store was immensely successful, accruing an estimated $30,000 annual profit following the end of the Civil War. In 1862 Dr. Hoyt retired from the business, and Sias Randall continued operating the business successfully until his own retirement in 1884. After Randall retired, he sold the business to his son, George Randall, who continued operating it for the majority of his life. The Randall Block, named after the buildings founder, still stands on Main Street in St. Johnsbury today, continuing to serve as a business center within the town.
