This listing is for the photographed 1800s Indian Head Bank Nashua NH 2 Dollar Obsolete Banknote. The note was signed and issued during its use, but due to the notes circulated condition the ink is no longer visible, so we are not sure when exactly this note was issued. This denomination of obsolete banknotes from the Indian Head Bank is a rarer find as the majority of known banknotes from this institution are the fractional 25 cents notes. The vignettes on the obverse of this note are a laborer holding a mallet with a factory in the background at the center, an allegorical woman, possibly the goddess Diana, holding a spear, bow, and arrows on the left end, and finally a portrait of a woman in the bottom corner of the right end. Very Good (VG) grade/condition, very fragile condition with visible signs of circulation from age, but the printed vignettes and wording on the note are still clear. Rare find and an excellent piece of New Hampshire history!

The Indian Head Bank building is still a historic building in downtown Nashua NH. From its inception in 1851, the bank moved locations several times throughout the city. The Internal Revenue Act of 1865 was passed by congress to promote the use of National Banks over state banks in the issuance of paper currency. This act included a 10% tax on all notes issued by banks other than national banks. This tax was designed to be prohibitive, effectively forcing state banks to either convert to national banks or cease issuing their own notes. The Indian Head Bank established itself as the Indian Head National Bank shortly after this act was enforced in 1865 and began to issue national currency instead of obsolete banknotes after this point. It's final location (constructed 1924) stands at the corner of Main and Temple Street today.
