This listing is for one 1860 Indian Head Penny, as pictured. Read below about the pointed bust variety of the 1860 Indian Head Cent.
Shortly after production commenced for1860 dated Indian cents, the Philadelphia Mint transitioned to a slightly modified design.
The updated design had the bust redrawn (right beneath the neck). The base of the neck on the newer design was thicker and less pointy if compared to the old design. Therefore, the new modified design is referred to as a Rounded or Broad Bust design, while the old design is referred to as a Pointed Bust design.
The Pointed Bust or the original design is much more scarce than the new rounded bust design. The Pointed Bust design is possibly about 6 times scarcer than the rounded bust design based on the population report figures.
The Indian Head cent, also known as an Indian Head penny, was a one-cent coin ($0.01) produced by the United States Bureau of the Mint from 1859 to 1909. It was designed by James Barton Longacre, the Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint.
The centenary of the birth of assassinated president Abraham Lincoln would occur in February 1909, and large numbers of privately manufactured souvenirs were already being issued. Many citizens had written to the Treasury Department, proposing a Lincoln coin.
For a collector, this is an excellent addition for US cents or coins in general.
