This listing is for the photographed 1863 Civil War Token Union For Ever Hero of Pea Ridge General Franz Sigel - AU Condition. This token features Franz Sigel, as seen by the inscription F. Sigel at the bottom of the obverse. Franz Sigel was a famous German-American Union Major General during the Civil War, who became known as the Hero of Pea Ridge. During the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865), cents disappeared from circulation because people hoarded government-issued coins. Private businesses filled the gap by issuing Civil War tokens, which circulated like one-cent pieces in many parts of the Union.

Patriotic Civil War tokens typically displayed a patriotic slogan or image on one or both sides. Since the majority of these tokens were minted in Union states, the slogans and images were decidedly pro-Union.
