This listing is for the photographed 1814 Vermont Glass Factory 1 Dollar Vermont Merchant Scrip Note. Issued on June 1st, 1814, an early date for these kinds of obsolete notes! These notes were funded and backed by the Cashier of the Farmers Bank in Troy, New York. The obverse of this note features a vignette of a shield with a banner that says "manufacture, thrive" laid against bricks with tree branches in the background at the upper center of the note. Almost Uncirculated (AU) grade/condition, little to no signs of circulation, crisp note! Scrip notes from the Vermont Glass Factory are rare and highly sought after among collectors, making this note the perfect addition to any collection! Great piece of history.

The Vermont Glass Factory was founded in 1812 on the Northern Shore of Lake Dunmore in Salisbury, Vermont. The factory was organized after a need for domestically made glass increased due to the War of 1812, which created trade embargos on imported goods, such as glass from England, which had been used by most Americans prior to the war. It was Vermont's first glass-making factory, catering to the growing demand for domestically produced glass for home and carriage window glass across New England. Lake Dunmore was chosen as the location of the factory because of its abundant and quartzite rich sands, which was the main ingredient needed to make high quality glass. The factory remained successful until 1849 when its property was purchased by the Lake Dunmore Hotel Company, transitioning the lake from a sight of manufacturing to summer recreation. 

This rare merchant scrip provides great insight into the history of Vermont economics and small business, making for a unique and interesting addition to a collection!
