This listing is for the photographed 1898 Victorian Cyprus 1/4 Piastre. Very rare coin from Cyprus while it was administered by the British Empire. It combines British royal imagery with local denominations that reflected the island's Ottoman monetary system. Seen on the obverse is a left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a small crown and veil. The inscription reads: VICTORIA QUEEN. The date 1898 appears below the bust. Seen on the reverse is a large denomination: ¼ PIASTRE and the denomination is surrounded by a laurel wreath tied at the bottom. In 1878, Britain assumed administration of Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire under the Cyprus Convention. Although the Ottoman Empire technically retained sovereignty for several decades, Britain governed the island. Cyprus officially became a British Crown Colony in 1925.
