This listing is for the photographed Antique Sterling Silver Thimble made by the James Swann & Sons Company. Thimble is designed with a hand stamped floral pattern, stunning pattern. Very cool piece. Size 1, very small size (12.5 mm in diameter). On the lower rim of the thimble there is stamped text saying "JS&S", which identifies the manufacturing company, as well as the text "Sterling", identifying the material used in the thimble's creation. Thimble has some deformities at the base, making it an imperfect circle, as pictured. Some history on the James Swann & Sons Company below.
James Swann & Son, a prominent thimble maker in Birmingham, England, was founded in 1887 by James Swann. The company quickly became one of the dominant thimble manufacturers in England at the time. After his death in 1922, the business was taken over by his son Samuel Henry Swann, and later by his granddaughter Margaret Ethel. In 1957, the business was sold to Stanley Gardner Powell, with Margaret remaining as managing director until 1967. Two former employees, Ray Coggle and Frank Jones, jointly ran the company from 1970 to 1986. Ray Coggle eventually continued the business alone until his retirement in 2005.
