1844 Great Britain Queen Victoria One Penny Model Token Bimetallic - Vintage Queen Victoria One Penny Model Bimetallic Copper & Zinc/Nickel
This listing is for the Vintage Queen Victoria One Penny Model Bimetallic Copper & Zinc/Nickel. This piece features a distinctive two-part design, with a dark copper outer ring encircling a lighter-colored nickel-zinc alloy center. Obverse features: The center showcases a detailed "Young Head" portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, inscribed with "Victoria Reg:". The outer copper ring is boldly embossed with the words "ONE PENNY MODEL." The reverse shows the center featuring a numeral "1," while the outer ring repeats the "ONE PENNY MODEL" text. During the 1840s, the British government was considering replacing its cumbersome, heavy copper "cartwheel" pennies with more portable alternatives. Joseph Moore designed these "models" to demonstrate how a bimetallic coin could maintain a high intrinsic value while being conveniently sized. Great Find!
