This listing is for the photographed 1860s Worthington and Warner's Commercial College 1 Dollar Trade Currency Note. This note is an unissued remainder, having no signatures or issue date. The note says that it "will pay to the bearer $1 in tuition on receipt of current funds", meaning that rather than being used as practice currency among students this note was used to go towards a students tuition. The obverse of the note is tinted green and features a vignette of a sailing ship in the lower left corner, various grain, fruit, and a bees nest at the center, and a bald eagle with a U.S. shield and patriotic motto on the right end. Uncirculated (UNC) grade/condition, no folds or other signs of circulation, crisp note! Rare surviving "college currency" notes from their early usage in the late 19th century. Great rarer find with an incredibly interesting history!
The Worthington & Warner's Commercial College was founded by B. M. Worthington and F. W. Warner, opening in August of 1864. The school was located in the hall of the Central Block in Concord, New Hampshire. B. M. Worthington was renowned for his penmanship, and integrated his skill into the schools curriculum. He and his partner, F.W. Warner, founded several different commercial and business colleges across the Midwest and East Coast. The Concord Worthington & Warner's College was one of the first commercial colleges established in the state, soon becoming immensely popular for its excellent penmanship courses and showcases. Worthington even hand wrote all of the diplomas for the first few graduating classes from the school. They offered curriculums for both men and women, but primarily advertised to their male students. The college only operated in Concord for a short time, closing in 1867.
