This listing is for the photographed 1870 Dominion of Canada 25 Cents Fractional Note. This note has no plate letter below the issue date, making it a rarer type from this series. Portrait of Britannia displayed at the center of the obverse of this note. Very Good/Fine (VG/F) grade/condition, heavily worn due to circulation, fragile note. Excellent rarer note, great addition to any collection! P#8a (Pick Number 8a).
The Twenty-Five Cents fractional paper currency issued by the Dominion of Canada in the late 19th-early 20th century were known as "Shinplaster" notes. The term "Shinplaster" widely refers to fractional paper currency circulated in economies of the 19th century where there were coinage shortages. The first design was printed on March 1, 1870, and the final design was first printed on July 2, 1923.
Before Canada had a well-established national currency, both American and British coins circulated widely alongside locally issued banknotes. After the American Civil War there was a shortage of American coins being circulated across North America, which lead to the issuance of these fractional paper notes as a replacement.
