The obverse of this note displays the Hermitage of Cerro del Carmen on the left end with a flying bird above. The reverse side shows two Guatemalans at the center. Before the Banco de Guatemala was created, Guatemala’s currency system was fragmented. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, various private banks were authorized to issue their own notes. The Banco de Guatemala was officially established in 1945, following financial reforms promoted by President Juan José Arévalo’s administration. Its founding legislation centralized the power of note issuance, removing that privilege from private banks. This move was intended to modernize the financial system, stabilize the quetzal (introduced in 1925 to replace the peso), and create a true central bank.
