Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, served as an important location during World War II due to their key location at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea. Because of this, Gibraltar became heavily fortified and became a crucial naval and military base for Allied forces during the war. At the onset of the war, much of Gibraltar's civilian population was evacuated to make room for military operations. This evacuation, coupled with wartime trade disruptions, created economic instability and a shortage of coinage.
To address the shortage of coins, the Government of Gibraltar issued emergency paper money in 1941. These notes were produced in lower denominations — 2 shillings, 10 shillings, and £1 — to replace scarce metal coins. The issuance was intended to be temporary, circulating alongside British currency until normal economic conditions could resume. After the war, with the return of normal trade and supplies, Gibraltar phased out these emergency notes, returning to standard British currency.
These wartime notes are now considered valuable historical collectibles due to their rarity and the specific context of their issuance during a period of global conflict.
