RARE 1939 Banco Central Del Ecuador 10 Sucres Note - Scarce Early Date, Presidente Overprint - 1939 Ecuadorian Diez Ten Sucres Note - P#92a

This listing is for the photographed 1939 Ecuador 10 Sucres Banknote. Issued on October 17, 1939, in Quito by the Central Bank of Ecuador. Series GA. Scarce, very early issue date and series! This note is an even rarer issue type because it has the word "Presidente" overprinted just below the signature on the left end of the note. Obverse of this note shows a woman spreading seeds at the center. Reverse shows the country's coat of arms at the center printed in blue. Fine (F) grade/condition, very circulated note with some margin damage, as pictured. Great rare addition to any collection! Cool piece of Ecuador history! P#92a (Pick Number 92a).

The Ecuadorian Sucre replaced the peso as the country's national currency beginning in 1884, but banknotes were not issued until 1885 and 1886 first by private banks. The Central Bank of Ecuador (El Banco Central del Ecuador) did not issue their first sucre banknotes until 1928, issuing them in the denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 sucres. These first notes had a gold redemption clause, promising the bearer of the currency its value in gold. The clause was held by the bank's notes until 1939 when text on the note was modified to remove the gold standard. Additional denominations of 500 and 1000 sucres were authorized in 1944. The Central Bank of Ecuador remained the main issuer of the country's banknotes until inflation beginning at the end of the 20th century led the country to adopt the US Dollar as their currency, replacing the sucre on January 9th, 2000, which remain the banknotes in use in Ecuador today.
