This listing is for the photographed Antique 1880s Sterling Silver Quaker Thimble made by the Simons Bros Company. Thimble is designed with a basic pattern, different from other popular ornamented thimble designs of this company. Made of sterling silver as identified by its outside stamp. Size 7. The Simon Bros Co. makers mark of a Gothic S in an upturned bell or shield is engraved on the inside apex of the thimble as well as the word "Quaker" below it. The small sized maker's mark indicates that this thimble is an earlier product of this company likely dating to the 1880s or before. The thimble is in perfect condition for its age with little to no deformities from use. Thimbles from this company are highly sought after today, making this an excellent addition to any collection!
Founded in Philadelphia, PA in 1839 by George Washington Simons and later joined by his brother, Peter B. Simons, the Simons Bros Co. became popular for their gold and silver thimbles and pen cases. They were considered pioneers in the movement towards industrialization because of their innovations within the metal manufacturing industry. During and shortly after the U.S. Civil War, the company was responsible for creating officers' presentation swords and cases. At the 1893 Colombia Expedition they were awarded a medal for their excellently crafted thimbles.
