This listing is for the photographed Antique World War I Era United States USMC Marines Uniform Button. Issued by the Horstmann Company in Philadelphia. This button is a smaller issue and was likely used on a hat or cuff rather than a coat. Front of this button depicts an eagle perching atop a diagonal anchor with 13 stars along the upper border. The back mark of this button says "Horst/Phila", a shorter version of the "Horstmann/Phila" back mark that was used from 1893 until the company ceased its production in 1935. Button is approximately 1/2" in length. Excellent condition, great piece of history!

The Horstmann firm was established in 1816 by William H. Horstmann, a German immigrant. By the mid-19th century, Horstmann was a leading supplier of military goods, producing buttons, swords, and other equipment for the U.S. armed forces. Horstmann manufactured Marine Corps buttons that adhered to the regulations of the time. These typically featured the eagle and anchor emblem. The buttons were often made of gilt brass, ensuring durability and a polished appearance suitable for dress uniforms. Many Horstmann buttons bore distinctive backmarks, such as “HORSTMANN PHILADELPHIA” or variations, which identified the manufacturer.
