Acuñado por primera vez en 1913, el níquel Buffalo había sido difícil de acuñar durante mucho tiempo, y después de que completara el período de 25 años durante el cual solo podía ser reemplazado por el Congreso, la Casa de la Moneda se apresuró a reemplazarlo con un nuevo diseño. La Casa de la Moneda realizó un concurso de diseño, a principios de 1938, requiriendo que Jefferson fuera representado en el anverso y la casa de Jefferson, Monticello, en el reverso. Schlag ganó el concurso, pero se le pidió que presentara un reverso completamente nuevo e hiciera otros cambios antes de que la nueva pieza entrara en producción en octubre de 1938.
La mayoría de la gente piensa que el níquel Jefferson es común (y lo es hasta cierto punto), pero hay fechas más raras y tipos coleccionables. El nombre Monticello deriva del italiano que significa "pequeña montaña". Monticello fue construido en 1772.
