This listing is for the photographed 1862 A. B. Houston / Northfield Bank 10 Cent Merchant Scrip Note. This scrip note would have been backed by the Northfield Bank in Northfield, Vermont, as identified by the banks name printed at the center of the note. Dated October 10th, 1862. Northfield Bank scrip notes signed by A. B. Houston are not specifically cataloged in references on Vermont scrip notes, making these notes rare finds! Very Fine (VF) grade/condition, visible folds and other signs of circulation, as well as two punched cancellation holes at the bottom of the note. Great rarer find, making for the perfect addition to any collection!
Not much is known about the signer of this note, A. B. Houston, seeing as these specific issues have no official record in any Vermont scrip catalogs. But the likely merchant who signed and issued these scrip notes is Aaron B. Houston, who worked as a carpenter in Northfield, Vermont throughout the mid-19th century.
