This listing is for the photographed 1864 James Fellows 3 Cents Hopkinton NH Obsolete Merchant Scrip Note. This is an unissued remainder, meaning that it was never circulated, having no signatures or serial numbers. The note was printed on July 25th, 1864. The reverse of this note features a printed design at the center, which is a rarer find among obsolete currency, as most have blank backs. Uncirculated (UNC) grade/condition, no signs of circulation, crisp note! Interesting and rare obsolete note in excellent condition! LaFond gives this note an R6 rarity, with only 6 to 10 known notes today. Must have for any collection!

This scrip note would be used similar to a modern-day coupon, giving the customer a discount of the determined amount off of their purchase of more than 1 dollar at the merchant's store. Scrip notes were popularly used during the Civil War and the aftermath of the economic panic of 1857 in an attempt to boost sales for local businesses.

James Fellows was born in Salisbury, NH in 1821 to a farming family. He grew up helping out on his family's farm while getting some elementary schooling. By 1860 he moved to Hopkinton, NH, opening a local country store that sold imported goods from England and the West Indies. By 1870 he sold the store and purchased a farm in Henniker, NH, which he worked for the rest of his life.
