This coin was struck in Buenos Aires during a period when Argentina was developing its national monetary system following the creation of the peso moneda nacional in 1881. The 2-centavos denomination was part of the country's regular bronze coinage from 1882 through 1896.  The 1890 date is particularly interesting historically because Argentina was experiencing a major financial and political crisis. The country had accumulated substantial foreign debt and faced a severe economic crisis in 1890. The crisis contributed to the Revolution of the Park, an uprising in Buenos Aires against President Miguel Juárez Celman. Although the revolt failed militarily, political pressure eventually led to Juárez Celman's resignation later that year.
