Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, served as an important location during World War II due to their key location at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea. Because of this, Gibraltar became heavily fortified and became a crucial naval and military base for Allied forces during the war. At the onset of the war, much of Gibraltar's civilian population was evacuated to make room for military operations. This evacuation, coupled with wartime trade disruptions, created economic instability and a shortage of coinage.
