During World War II, the United States introduced a nationwide rationing system to ensure fair distribution of scarce goods and to support the war effort. Rationing officially began in early 1942, shortly after the U.S. entered the war, as materials like rubber, gasoline, and certain foods were redirected to supply the military and allied nations. Each American civilian received ration books, which contained removable stamps or coupons used to purchase limited quantities of rationed items. These books were distributed based on household size, age, and specific needs. The first items to be rationed were tires and gasoline, followed by sugar in May 1942. Soon after came coffee, meat, butter, canned goods, cheese, and shoes.

Consumers still had to pay money in addition to surrendering the appropriate stamp. Retailers collected the stamps and turned them into wholesalers to restock their supplies. The system aimed to maintain price stability and ensure that all citizens, regardless of wealth, had equitable access to essentials. Four major ration books were issued during the war, each with different colors and designs, covering various categories of goods. For instance, “Red Points” typically applied to meat and fats, while “Blue Points” were used for processed foods. Violations of rationing regulations, such as trading stamps or hoarding goods, were punishable by fines or imprisonment. Rationing gradually ended after the war’s conclusion, most restrictions were lifted by 1946, but the system left a lasting mark on American life.
