W. & S. Blackinton was founded by a father and son, both with the same name; William Sumner Blackinton, in Attleboro, Massachusetts, in 1866. They specialized in gold-filled watch chains and employed 15 workers at its founding. In a few short years, due to the immediate popularity of the company's watch chains, their employment grew to 85 workers. Another son, Louis Blackinton, joined the company in 1880, which by that point had expanded to Providence, Rhode Island. By 1894 the company employed over 130 people. Throughout its time of operation, the W. & S. Blackinton company continued to pride themselves in manufacturing high-quality gold-filled watch chains, which only boosted their continued popularity into the 20th century.
