These coins are connected to Henri Christophe, one of the most important figures in early Haitian history. After the Haitian Revolution and the death of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haiti became politically divided. Christophe controlled the northern part of the country and eventually established the Kingdom of Haiti there. On March 28, 1811, Christophe proclaimed himself King Henri I. He was formally crowned on June 2, 1811, beginning the northern Haitian monarchy that lasted until 1820. The coin's portrait shows Henri Christophe wearing a laurel wreath and armor, emphasizing both his royal authority and military background. Around him is the Latin inscription: HENRICUS DEI GRATIA HAITI REX "Henri, by the Grace of God, King of Haiti." The reverse features a crowned shield with a phoenix rising from the flames. The phoenix was an important symbol for Christophe's Haiti, representing a nation rising again from destruction, following the devastation of the Haitian Revolution. The surrounding motto is: DEUS. CAUSA. ATQUE GLADIUS MEUS. "God, My Cause, and My Sword."
