La primera acuñación oficial del cobre grande fue en 1793, y su producción continuó hasta 1857, cuando fue reemplazado oficialmente por la moneda de un centavo de tamaño moderno, con el diseño "Águila Voladora". Los cobres grandes también estaban hechos de cobre casi puro, o cobre tan puro como emergía de la fundición, sin ninguna adición deliberada de otros metales (como ocurre en el bronce).
Como respuesta a la crítica pública de la Cabeza Clásica (Matrona), la Casa de la Moneda asignó al Grabador Jefe Scot para rediseñar el centavo en abril de 1815, después de la Guerra de 1812. Solo se produjeron 2 cobres grandes de Cabeza de Matrona en 1815 en planchetas sobrantes de 1814. Este nuevo diseño amplió el retrato del anverso, dando a la Libertad un aspecto mucho más maduro (lo que llevó a la referencia de Cabeza de Matrona), y rodeó el retrato con estrellas a lo largo del borde exterior de la moneda. El diseño de "Cabeza de Matrona" fue modificado en 1835 para dar a la Libertad un aspecto más joven y los centavos de cabeza de matrona continuaron haciéndose hasta 1839.
Los cobres grandes en los EE. UU. se acuñaron durante solo 64 años, de 1793 a 1857, lo que resultó en una cantidad general menor en circulación que muchos otros tipos de monedas. Es una amplia gama con muchas variaciones para explorar.
