Un farthing de cobre británico sucedió al farthing inglés después de que Inglaterra y Escocia se unieran en el Reino de Gran Bretaña en 1707, aunque no de inmediato. Bajo la reina Ana, se acuñó un pequeño número de farthings de patrón, pero ninguno para circulación, ya que muchos farthings ingleses de reinados anteriores aún estaban disponibles en circulación. Algunos farthings de cobre británicos se acuñaron en los reinados de Jorge I y Jorge II. Para la ascensión de Jorge III, en 1760, muchas falsificaciones estaban en circulación, y la Casa de la Moneda Real dejó de acuñar monedas de cobre en 1775. Los siguientes farthings fueron los primeros acuñados con energía de vapor, en 1799 por Matthew Boulton en su Casa de la Moneda de Soho, bajo licencia. Boulton acuñó más en 1806, y la Casa de la Moneda Real reanudó la producción en 1821. El farthing se acuñó regularmente bajo Jorge IV y Guillermo IV, para entonces con un diseño muy parecido a una versión más pequeña del penique.
