1839 Booby Head Large Cent - Condición VG+ - Primer año de producción - 1839 US 1 Cent Estados Unidos 1839 Large Cent - Braided Hair 1839 a 1857
La primera acuñación oficial del "large cent" fue en 1793, y su producción continuó hasta 1857, cuando fue reemplazado oficialmente por la moneda de un centavo de tamaño moderno (comúnmente llamada "penny"), con el diseño "Flying Eagle". Los "large cents" también estaban hechos de cobre casi puro, o cobre tan puro como salía de la fundición, sin ninguna adición deliberada de otros metales (como ocurre en el bronce).
Como respuesta a las críticas públicas al "Classic (Matron) Head", la Casa de la Moneda asignó al Grabador Jefe Scot para rediseñar el centavo en abril de 1815, después de la Guerra de 1812. Solo se produjeron 2 "large cents" "Matron Head" en 1815 en cospeles sobrantes de 1814. Este nuevo diseño amplió el retrato del anverso, dándole a la Libertad una apariencia mucho más madura (lo que llevó a la referencia "Matron Head"), y rodeó el retrato con estrellas a lo largo del borde exterior de la moneda. El diseño "Matron head" fue modificado en 1835 para darle a la Libertad una apariencia más joven y los "Matron head cents" se siguieron fabricando hasta 1839.
Similar al centavo reacuñado de 1804, alrededor de las décadas de 1860 y 1870, un tercero no afiliado a la Casa de la Moneda realizó varias "reacuñaciones". Aunque no son centavos genuinos de 1823, a veces se coleccionan junto con sus contrapartes genuinas. La reacuñación no puede confundirse con la original, ya que fue acuñada con un reverso de 1813.
Los "Large Cents" en los EE. UU. se acuñaron durante solo 64 años, de 1793 a 1857, lo que resultó en una cantidad total en circulación menor que muchos otros tipos de monedas. Es un rango amplio con muchas variaciones para explorar.
