Solo se hicieron 390,000 monedas de la variedad 3 cerrado en 1873. Una moneda impresionante para una colección.
Dato curioso: Abraham Lincoln juró un segundo mandato como presidente solo minutos después de firmar el proyecto de ley que autorizaba la moneda de níquel de tres centavos.
La moneda de níquel de tres centavos fue producida por la Casa de la Moneda de EE. UU. desde 1865 hasta 1889. Durante los años de 1865 a 1873, la Casa de la Moneda también produjo una pieza de plata de tres centavos. Debido a que la serie fue producida por la Casa de la Moneda por un período de solo 25 años, varias de sus ediciones pueden considerarse raras y coleccionables. De hecho, las monedas raras datadas pueden negociarse por más de tres veces la prima de las monedas de fecha común.
La moneda de níquel de tres centavos nunca fue popular como moneda de circulación.
Con la acuñación federal de metales preciosos acaparada durante la agitación económica de la Guerra Civil estadounidense, incluyendo la pieza de plata de tres centavos, e incluso el centavo de cobre-níquel que tenía una prima, el Congreso emitió papel moneda en denominaciones tan pequeñas como tres centavos para reemplazar las monedas acaparadas en el comercio. Estos pequeños trozos de papel se volvieron raídos y sucios, y el público llegó a odiar los "shinplasters". Después de la emisión en 1864 de un centavo de bronce más ligero y una pieza de dos centavos de ese metal, ambos circulando libremente, hubo propuestas para una pieza de tres centavos en cobre-níquel para reemplazar el billete de tres centavos.
La pieza de níquel de tres centavos circuló inicialmente bien, pero se volvió menos popular cuando se introdujo la moneda de níquel de cinco centavos en 1866, una moneda más grande y conveniente, con un valor de cinco centavos que se ajustaba mejor al sistema decimal. Después de 1870, la mayoría de los años vieron bajas acuñaciones anuales para el níquel de tres centavos, y en 1890 el Congreso la abolió. Las últimas se acuñaron en 1889; muchas se fundieron para acuñar más monedas de cinco centavos. La emisión no es ampliamente coleccionada, y los precios de las fechas raras siguen siendo bajos según los estándares de la acuñación coleccionable estadounidense.
