El diseño de este billete es diferente a cualquier otro producido. En lugar del típico retrato de un presidente, padre fundador u otra persona importante en el centro del billete, representa un águila negra sobre la bandera estadounidense. Debajo del águila, a cada lado de sus garras, hay retratos más pequeños de Abraham Lincoln y Ulysses Grant. Este es también el único billete que tiene retratos de dos presidentes diferentes.
Este tipo de certificado de plata se emitió a partir de 1899. La Serie de certificados de plata de 1 dólar de 1899 a veces se llama billete de "Águila Negra" debido a la prominencia del águila en el anverso. Este billete se imprimió hace más de 115 años, lo que lo convierte en un coleccionable cada vez más raro.
