La moneda de diez centavos Barber fue diseñada por el Grabador Jefe de la Oficina de la Casa de la Moneda de los Estados Unidos, Charles E. Barber. Se acuñaron entre 1892 y 1916.
Durante gran parte de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, la mayoría de las monedas de plata estadounidenses llevaban un diseño de una Libertad sentada. A finales de la década de 1880, había cada vez más llamamientos para reemplazar el diseño de la Libertad Sentada, utilizado desde la década de 1830 en la mayoría de las denominaciones de monedas de plata.
En 1891, el Director de la Casa de la Moneda, Edward O. Leech, habiendo sido autorizado por el Congreso para aprobar rediseños de monedas, ordenó un concurso, buscando una nueva apariencia para las monedas de plata. Como solo el ganador recibiría un premio en efectivo, los artistas invitados se negaron a participar y ninguna propuesta del público resultó adecuada. Leech instruyó a Barber para que preparara nuevos diseños para las monedas de diez, veinticinco y cincuenta centavos, y después de que el grabador jefe realizara cambios para obtener el respaldo de Leech, fueron aprobados por el presidente Benjamin Harrison en noviembre de 1891.
