Este listado corresponde al billete de 500 Reis del Banco de Portugal de 1904 fotografiado. Emitido el 27 de diciembre de 1904. Esta emisión tiene "República" sobreimpreso en el escudo de armas en la parte superior central del anverso de este billete, lo que lo diferencia de otras emisiones. El reverso de este billete representa la cabeza de una mujer con un casco y una rama de olivo. La marca de agua de este billete es un busto de Mercurio. Una gran pieza de historia y una excelente adición a cualquier colección. P#105a (Número Pick 105a).
El Banco de Portugal es el banco central de Portugal, fundado el 19 de noviembre de 1846. Su creación fue el resultado de la fusión de dos instituciones más antiguas: el Banco de Lisboa y la Companhia Confiança Nacional. Inicialmente, funcionó como un banco comercial privado con la autoridad para emitir billetes y administrar el sistema monetario de Portugal. A mediados del siglo XIX, Portugal luchaba contra la inestabilidad financiera, lo que llevó a una falta de confianza en los múltiples emisores de moneda. En respuesta, el estado buscó centralizar el control de la oferta monetaria. En 1887, el gobierno otorgó al Banco de Portugal el derecho exclusivo de emitir billetes en todo el país.
