Los Buffalo Nickels se produjeron desde 1913 hasta 1938 y son conocidos por su diseño deteriorado. Debido a que las características, incluida la fecha, son de alto relieve, las monedas se han desgastado rápidamente. A pesar de los intentos de la Casa de la Moneda de ajustar el diseño de la moneda, resultaron ser acuñadas de forma indistinta y sujetas a un rápido desgaste. Las fechas se desgastaron fácilmente en circulación.
En 1938, después de la expiración del período mínimo de 25 años durante el cual el diseño no podía ser reemplazado sin la autorización del Congreso, fue reemplazado por el Jefferson nickel, diseñado por Felix Schlag. El diseño de Fraser es admirado hoy en día, y se ha utilizado en monedas conmemorativas y en la serie de oro American Buffalo y los Buffalo Nickels con y sin fecha se utilizan en cinturones, anillos, carteras y otras piezas de joyería y ropa.
