This listing is for the photographed 1917 War Savings Society WW1 War Bond Pinback Button. Center of pin depicts a portrait of Benjamin Franklin. The pins were issued in relation to the purchase of War Savings Stamps, issued by the U.S. Treasury in order to support the war effort on the home front. These buttons in particular were made by the American Art Works company in Coshocton, Ohio, as indicated on the reverse of the pin. Small sized button, popular for the period, approximately 5/8" in length.

In 1917, the U.S. government introduced War Savings Stamps (WSS) and Thrift Stamps as a way to finance the war effort. These were small-denomination bonds that made it easy for ordinary citizens, including children, to contribute to the war effort. To promote the purchase of these stamps, War Savings Societies were formed across the country. These were community-based organizations that encouraged collective participation in the program. Members pledged to save money and buy War Savings Stamps regularly. These pins were issued as a symbol of membership in these societies. They featured an image of Benjamin Franklin, a symbol of thrift and frugality, aligning with the campaign's themes of saving and patriotism. The War Savings Stamps program was highly successful, raising significant funds for the U.S. government. It also introduced many Americans to the concept of saving and investing.

These pins serve as tangible reminders of the home front efforts during World War 1 and the impact all Americans made on supporting the war effort during this period. Excellent antique finds!
