The Ukrainian War of Independence, also known as the Ukrainian-Soviet War, lasted from 1917 to 1921, and is considered part of the larger Russian Civil War. The Ukrainian War of Independence resulted in the establishment and development of an independent Ukraine, later becoming the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic between 1919 and 1920. In order to fund the war effort, the government began to issue these State Treasury Bond Notes that people would buy to essentially lend money to the government to fund the war, with the promise of getting paid back with a 3.6% interest rate, which would be immediately paid via these coupons. The coupons would be cut out of the bond sheets and used as circulated currency, especially as the war effort went on.
