Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el control británico de Hong Kong se reanudó en 1945 tras la rendición de Japón. La administración colonial británica restableció su autoridad y comenzó a reconstruir el territorio, que había sufrido daños significativos durante la ocupación japonesa (1941-1945). Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el dólar de Hong Kong (HKD) fue restablecido como moneda oficial, reemplazando la moneda emitida por Japón utilizada durante la ocupación.
