Níquel Jefferson de 1954, P,D,S; Elige por Grado y Ceca.
Acuñado por primera vez en 1913, el níquel Búfalo había sido difícil de acuñar durante mucho tiempo, y después de que completó el período de 25 años durante el cual solo podía ser reemplazado por el Congreso, la Casa de la Moneda actuó rápidamente para reemplazarlo con un nuevo diseño. La Casa de la Moneda realizó un concurso de diseño a principios de 1938, requiriendo que Jefferson fuera representado en el anverso y la casa de Jefferson, Monticello, en el reverso. Schlag ganó el concurso, pero se le pidió que presentara un reverso completamente nuevo y realizara otros cambios antes de que la nueva pieza entrara en producción en octubre de 1938. El nombre Monticello proviene del italiano y significa "pequeña montaña".
