El Roosevelt Dime se introdujo en 1946, poco después de la conclusión de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y menos de un año después de la muerte de Franklin D. Roosevelt, el 32º Presidente de los Estados Unidos. Este tipo de moneda de 10 centavos vino a reemplazar al Mercury Dime que dejó de acuñarse en 1945. El diseño del reverso presenta una antorcha encendida en el centro con una rama de olivo y una rama de roble colocadas a cada lado. Mientras posaba para un retrato el 12 de abril de 1945, Franklin Delano Roosevelt se quejó repentinamente de un fuerte dolor de cabeza, se desplomó inconsciente y falleció más tarde ese mismo día.
En 1965, todas las monedas que tradicionalmente se fabricaban con 90% de plata y 10% de cobre fueron reemplazadas por monedas de metales comunes. Inicialmente, su composición era 90% de plata y 10% de cobre, pero esto se cambió en 1965 debido al costo de usar plata. La Casa de la Moneda de EE. UU. adoptó un "sándwich" revestido de cobre y níquel. Esta moneda está hecha de un material revestido, lo que significa que la capa exterior es una mezcla de cobre y níquel, mientras que el núcleo interior es de cobre sólido.
En 1968 se restablecieron las marcas de ceca por primera vez desde 1964.
