Galerio Valerio Maximiano (c. 258-311 d.C.) fue emperador romano del 305 al 311 d.C. dentro del sistema tetrárquico, inicialmente como césar de Diocleciano. Sus logros militares incluyen la derrota de Narsés del Imperio Sasánida en Satala (298 d.C.), la posible captura de Ctesifonte (299 d.C.) y campañas exitosas contra los carpios (297 y 300 d.C.). Tras la abdicación de Diocleciano, Galerio ascendió al estatus de augusto, pero se enfrentó a numerosos usurpadores a medida que la Tetrarquía colapsaba. A pesar de su oposición inicial al cristianismo, finalmente puso fin a la persecución diocleciana a través de su Edicto de Sérdica en el 311 d.C.
