Este listado es para un fósil de ortoceras pulido fotografiado. Estos son de un tamaño mucho mayor de lo que se encuentra típicamente. ¡¡¡Fósiles increíbles del ancestro de los calamares modernos de hace millones de años!!! Súper guay.
Estos fósiles, comúnmente conocidos por el nombre de género Orthoceras, son cefalópodos extintos de "concha recta" que vivieron durante el período Devónico Superior (hace unos 370 millones de años). Vivían dentro de sus conchas, usaban tentáculos para agarrar comida y utilizaban propulsión a chorro, rociando agua para moverse.
Orthoceras es un género de cefalópodos nautiloideos extintos restringido a calizas marinas de edad Ordovícica Media de los Estados Bálticos y Suecia. Este género a veces se llama Orthoceratites. A veces mal escrito como Orthocera, Orthocerus u Orthoceros.
Anteriormente se pensaba que Orthoceras tenía una distribución mundial debido al uso del género como taxón cajón de sastre para numerosas especies de nautiloideos con concha cónica a lo largo del Paleozoico y el Triásico. Desde que se realizó este trabajo y la recatalogación del género, Orthoceras sensu stricto se refiere a Orthoceras regulare, de las calizas del Mar Báltico de Suecia y áreas vecinas de edad Ordovícica.
