This coin was issued during the Federal Republic period of Argentina, when the country was becoming increasingly integrated into the international economy. The 1880s–1890s were an important period for Argentina: Buenos Aires was rapidly expanding, agriculture and cattle exports were growing, and large numbers of European immigrants were arriving. The coin belonged to the monetary system established around the peso moneda nacional, introduced in 1881. The 1-centavo denomination represented 1/100 of a peso. Interestingly, the coin's specifications followed the general standards associated with the Latin Monetary Union. Although Argentina was not formally a member in the same way as France or Switzerland, its monetary system was influenced by the same standards. The denomination was eventually demonetized on January 1, 1896, making the 1894 issue one of the final years of this particular 1-centavo type.
