El asentamiento humano más antiguo conocido en Sarawak, en las Cuevas de Niah, data de hace 40.000 años. Una serie de cerámicas chinas datadas entre los siglos VIII y XIII d.C. fueron descubiertas en el yacimiento arqueológico de Santubong. Las regiones costeras de Sarawak estuvieron bajo la influencia del Imperio de Brunéi en el siglo XVI.
En 1839, James Brooke, un explorador británico, llegó a Sarawak. Él, y sus descendientes, gobernaron el estado desde 1841 hasta 1946. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue ocupado por los japoneses durante tres años. Después de la guerra, el último Rajá Blanco, Charles Vyner Brooke, cedió Sarawak a Gran Bretaña, y en 1946 se convirtió en una Colonia de la Corona Británica. El 22 de julio de 1963, Sarawak obtuvo el autogobierno de los británicos y posteriormente se convirtió en uno de los miembros fundadores de Malasia, establecida el 16 de septiembre de 1963.
