The history of the Irish Claddagh ring dates back to the 17th century in Claddagh, a fishing village on the west coast of Ireland. The design has many components, all with different intertwining meanings. The heart, crown, and hands represent love, loyalty and friendship respectively. The origins of the Claddagh design are shrouded in mystery, as there is no concrete truth to the tale of its creation. Many believe the legend that a fisherman by the name of Richard Joyce created the ring in the late 17th century after he escaped servitude under pirates and married his love from his home village. Their wedding bands were said to be the first claddagh rings, representing their love and devotion for one another.

The Claddagh ring has different meanings depending on the position it is worn on a person's hand, representing the relationship status of the individual wearing the ring. Single individuals wear the ring on their right ring finger with the heart facing outward, telling the world that they are still in search of a partnership. Individuals in the courting or dating phase of a relationship wear the ring on their right hand with the heart facing inward, showing that they have love under consideration. Lastly, individuals who are married wear their rings on their left ring finger with the heart facing inwards, representing commitment and love between the two individuals. Claddagh rings are commonly used as wedding bands after an individual is wed.

Incredibly interesting piece and a must have for anyone interested in Irish tradition and history!
